Kroger s Star Business Units Essay - 1048 Words

Kroger’s star business units would be nonperishables and perishables. Nonperishables consist primarily of groceries, general merchandise, health and beauty care and natural foods; this segment accounted for $44.62 billion for the company in 2014. Perishables consist primarily of floral, produce, meat, seafood, bakery, and deli, accounting for $17.53 billion for the company in 2014 (10-K. Kroger Co. 2014. 41). Consistently, since 2010, the nonperishable business unit has accounted for over 50% of Kroger’s sales revenue, and the perishable business unit has accounted for over 20%. Within the nonperishable and perishable units, corporate brands are a large driver of sales and give the company a competitive advantage. In 2014, 25.5 % of sales dollars came from Kroger’s corporate brands (â€Å"Kroger Fact Book 2014†). Nonperishable have seen constant growth from 2010 to 2014. The most significant jump in sales revenue derived from nonperishables was seen from 2013 to 2014, with an increase of over $5 billion which can be seen in figure 3-2. The fact that Kroger is seeing such a large market share, over 50% of their revenue, coming from the nonperishable segment and 20% coming from the perishable segment, means that these are their stars due to their generation of considerable income. Both the pharmacy segment and the fuel segment of Kroger’s company would be considered their cash cows. Habitual Offender Laws free essay sample

Discussion Board Introduction to Criminal Justice Hello Everyone, Are habitual offender laws targeting the right people for incarceration? Well first I am going to speak a little about the habitual offender laws. State legislators angered with the situation drafted new laws designed to prevent early release, especially for certain crimes. These new laws are called enhancement statutes. Examples of such statues would be the Habitual Felons Act, RICO, the Career Criminal act, mandatory minimum sentence for trafficking in narcotics, perpetuating crimes in a violent manner, three-strikes laws, hate-crime laws and 10-20-Life for using gun during the commission of a crime. Enhancement statues are designed to get tough with chronic and persistent offenders and keep them off the streets for an extended period of time. The central features of enhancement statues are (1) that they add severe penalties (twenty to twenty-five years) on to the penalty for committing the original crime, and (2) those receiving enhancement-statue punishments are not entitled to features such as early release, gain time, and provisional credits. We will write a custom essay sample on Habitual Offender Laws or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In sentencing-guideline states, enhancement statues provide the amount of punishment by calculating the amount outside of the guidelines. The ultimate consequence of enhancement statues is that they ensure that the inmate undergoes a significantly long period of incarceration; this period is a flat-time sentence that cannot be affected by early-release procedures. Judges know that legislators have totally castrated the judicial discretion powers in every instance where they are faced with sentencing defendants convicted under enhancement statues. These enhancements have become common household names: three-strikes, 10-20-Life, habitual-criminal, and trafficking. Enhance sentences are almost universally disliked by trial judges, because they have no choice but to impose the statue in spite of mitigating factors. Of great importance for the judges’ disdain is that enhancement statues almost nullify judicial discretion. Between 1994 and 1995, twenty-four states adopted so-called three-strikes laws. Well I feel that the habitual law is not suit for every one because when it comes down to petty theft and small crimes that is a pretty harsh sentence when you looking at 10-20 years for stealing a candy bar four times in a row. This is not fair do to the crime not being significant . There are offenders that are rapist, murders, and vehicle assault/murder that do not get 10-20 years, So no I don’t feel the habitual offender law is targeting the right people. Should individual who commit misdemeanors, regardless of their status be subjected to lengthy prison terms? No I feel that should not because there are many programs that can help the offenders before they even reach lengthy prison terms. If we try and motivate and help these offenders on some of these circumstances you would be amazed. There are plenty of programs that are offered through the government to help try and prevent these things from happening over and over again. In my opinion the standards should be govern whether defendants are prosecuted as habitual offenders she be the case of the severity of the crime. If the crime do not fit the time it is not worthy to me. If someone get caught stealing candy bars five times don’t mean for you to give them the habitual statues because the nature of the crime is to petty for them to do 10-20 years. Now if the offender has raped twice I feel they should automatically get 10-20 years because of the severity of the crime.

It is particularly vital in the legal research that you understand the workings of the criminal justice system. The criminal justice system can be broken down into many different aspects, which fall under a variety of legal systems and laws. One of the most important components of the system is the criminal justice system itself. An important legal area is probation.Probation is the practice of allowing a person with a conviction in his criminal record to avoid a jail sentence or provide some form of sentence for a specific period of time. This can vary from as short as two weeks up to a year. There are also alternatives such as paying off a fine, whi ch requires the offender to repay a specified amount of money over a period of time. These different options can help to lower the risks associated with lawbreaking and to ensure that an offender is not committing crimes.Criminal law topics for research paper should be in accordance with the real life practice of the justice system, which is concerned with punishment. For instance, if you were considering an alternative to jail, you would not want to use the system to punish you as this would result in a court-ordered punishment. Probation is often used by offenders who are not yet deemed too dangerous to be released.Criminal law topics for research paper should also be on the practices of plea bargaining. Plea bargaining occurs when a prosecutor will attempt to persuade a judge to take a lesser sentence to get a sentence for the offender. Plea bargaining is sometimes a crucial part of the system, but it is not allowed to be used at all times. However, plea bargaining is usually a g reat technique for people who have just been convicted of a crime or those who have other restrictions placed on them. There are a number of other criminal law topics for research paper, such as sentencing. Sentencing is also another aspect of the criminal justice system that should be covered. Sentencing generally refers to the process of determining how long an offender will spend in prison. Sentences may vary depending on the offense and how serious the offense is.There are many different types of sentences available for those who have been convicted of a crime. A number of different types of sentences may be offered, but some types of sentences may be limited or temporary. For example, a suspended sentence may mean that the offender is only made to do community service instead of spending time in prison. Parole is also a temporary type of sentence, which can last between one to three years. While the topics about these law topics are very important, it is also important to remembe r that law enforcement officials may choose to alter the sentence as they see fit. Therefore, a law school student should be able to cover the various types of sentences available in depth.

Welfare War Essays - Welfare, Social Programs,

Welfare War The United States of America... the land of the free and the home of the tax-stricken. The country that is known as "the last superpower in the world" that developed the deadliest weapon on earth, sent the first person to the moon, and was the birthplace of the most powerful man in the world, Bill Gates, has forty million people (which include ten million children) without basic healthcare coverage. (Packet, pg.58) Although this "supernation" boasts of the "American dream," where the poor become rich overnight, the typical American citizen does not have a "super" lifestyle. Based on the average income of Americans, "one in every five U.S. nonelderly households are poor, one in four young households are poor, and over half of all households headed be a lone parent are poor." (Packet, pg.1) Though the United States has tried to mimic the welfare systems of that of Europe, the bureaucratic "red tape" and the conflicts that reside between the legislature and executive branches of the government have hindered the progress towards an effective welfare reform policy. In order to understand the progressions towards refining the wounded welfare system of the United States, one must first know what welfare means. The welfare state is "a state which takes the prime role in ensuring the provision of a minimum standard of living for citizens." (Professor VonDoepp) The two goals of the welfare state is that of 1. security against socio-economic deprivation (especially with the current Capitalistic system which families base their entire lifestyle on the outcome of the economy) Broye 2 2. equality against the still present racial tension and economical barriers that reside in society. Many critics of welfare programs across the world have argued whether the U.S. is really a welfare state because of the limited role played by the government to maintain a minimum standard of living. In Europe's case, just the opposite can be said for their welfare programs. European states such as Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom"provide higher minimum standards of income support than are available in the U.S." (Packet, pg.1) Only seven percent of households in Western Europe have incomes that are below the national median, compared to the United States where the poverty percentile is double. The only positive aspect that the U.S. has to show for their efforts in the current welfare system is the provision of free public education, which is higher than in Europe. (Packet, pg.16) In the U.S. the welfare system before the 1996 bipartisan revision, had far more gaping holes in the "social safety net" than that of the European states. Many skeptics believe that the 1996 Welfare Reform Bill will cause even more harm to the citizens of the U.S. Peter Edelmaun, the former assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the Department of Health and Human Services, resigned after having worked over 30 years after he read the reformation that was to take place from the Welfare Reform Bill. "The bill will move 20 million people, including 1.1 million children, into poverty, and forcing 11 million families (10 percent of all American family households) under the poverty line which was last estimated at $13,793 for a family of three. (Atlantic Monthly & Packet, pg. 46) While many European states including Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands provide healthcare Broye 3 centers, suitable housing, health/recreational spas, and regulate wage differentials and offering generous social assistance to the jobless, the United States recently passed a bill to narrow the eligibility for disabled children which will result in the removal of 100,000 to 200,000 of the children who currently receive SSI. Senator Edward Kennedy, who voted against the bill, described it best by saying it was "legislative child abuse." The most serious cut to arise from the political blood bath to create the Welfare Reform Bill is the limiting of food stamps to three months out of every three years for unemployed adults under the age of fifty who do not care for any siblings.
